Recently, GE Healthcare announced a seven-year partnership agreement with Sutter Health to provide AI driven medical technology and software upgrades for its non-profit healthcare system. According to Bloomberg, the cooperation amount is expected to bring in $1 billion in revenue for GE Healthcare.

In 2025, GE Healthcare will have a good start, and this order is also the largest one obtained since GE Healthcare's spin off from General Electric Co. in January 2023.

Further deepen cooperation
This collaboration is a further deepening of cooperation between both parties, and prior to this, Sutter Health had already been a familiar partner of GE Healthcare, with a 20-year partnership between the two parties.

Sutter Health is a non-profit healthcare system dedicated to providing comprehensive care throughout California. At present, we have a professional team consisting of over 57000 employees and clinical doctors, as well as over 12000 clinical assistants, providing services to nearly 3.5 million patients. Sutter Health provides excellent and affordable care through its hospitals, medical groups, outpatient surgical centers, emergency care clinics, telemedicine, home health, and end-of-life care services.

The cooperation between the two parties aims to broaden the avenues for obtaining innovative imaging services, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, with the goal of creating a smoother and more collaborative diagnosis and treatment experience for clinical doctors and patients within the Sutter Health system. Through long-term cooperation, Sutter will enhance the accessibility of basic diagnostic care in the California region, enabling patients to enjoy advanced technological services in their own communities. This will help shorten appointment waiting times, accelerate the issuance of diagnostic imaging scan results, achieve early diagnosis of diseases, improve diagnosis and treatment convenience, and ensure that patients receive more consistent and timely care.

In the cooperation, GE Medical's PET/CT will also be introduced first SPECT/CT、 Advanced imaging technologies such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), X-rays, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound, as well as GE Healthcare's AIR Recon DL MR image reconstruction software, will also be deployed as a key focus.

In addition, GE HealthCare's interventional diagnosis and treatment, mammography, diagnostic cardiology, maternal and child care, and anesthesia solutions will also be incorporated into Sutter Health's outpatient care centers to meet the growing nursing needs beyond traditional hospital environments. The specific innovative solutions mentioned include Omni Legend PET/CT StarGuide SPECT/CT 、 Equipped with Caption AI ™ Vscan Air software ™ SL ultrasound and AIR ™ Recon DL MR image reconstruction, etc.

And in the future, GE Healthcare will further support Sutter Health's healthcare system in expanding its advanced service lines and destination centers of excellence, including areas such as cardiac and vascular care, cancer care, and neuroscience. This includes acquiring new technologies and digital optimizations to expand clinical procedures and services, helping to achieve precise, high-quality medical services from early screening to diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.

As part of its expansion strategy, Sutter Health will open a total of 15 new outpatient centers by 2025. The agreement also mentions that by addressing the shortage of clinical doctors nationwide and using AI to obtain diagnostic scan results faster, it will help support Sutter Health's expansion. GE HealthCare plans to assist Sutter in designing a talent development program that will include community outreach and collaboration with radiology schools.

Peter Arduini, CEO of GE Healthcare, stated that AI and data management will continue to be the company's "focus," and said, "Many of the AI technologies in our products truly help clinicians get answers faster or make our products more efficient.

Leading the AI healthcare revolution
At present, the wave of artificial intelligence technology is sweeping the world. With the rapid development of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is penetrating into all aspects of our lives with unprecedented depth and breadth, bringing unprecedented convenience and change to modern society. From smart homes to autonomous driving, from healthcare to financial services, the application scenarios of AI are becoming increasingly widespread and are gradually becoming an important force driving social progress.

Since the split of GE Healthcare in 2023, it has continuously strengthened its layout in the field of artificial intelligence through mergers and acquisitions and cooperation. Among them, there were 3 merger and acquisition events:
 In February 2023, GE Healthcare acquired Caption Health, a developer of AI ultrasound technology. Caption Health is a leader in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the medical field. Its AI applications can assist in early disease detection and use AI to simplify and accelerate ultrasound examinations, supporting more clinical physicians to perform basic echocardiography. This technology can detect early signs of high-risk patients suffering from heart failure and other diseases in the doctor's office, patient's home, or other nursing places, thereby avoiding hospitalization and improving treatment outcomes.
 In January 2024, GE Healthcare announced plans to acquire MIM Software, a provider of artificial intelligence and medical image analysis. MIM Software was founded in 2003, focusing on providing AI based software covering multiple medical fields such as radiation oncology, molecular radiation therapy, diagnostic imaging, and urology. GE Healthcare plans to integrate MIM Software's innovative solutions into its advanced visualization products to drive the application of digital technologies, including AI based lesion segmentation and target delineation, dose analysis in radiation therapy, and other stages of disease diagnosis and treatment, particularly in rapidly growing fields such as radiological imaging, nuclear medicine molecular imaging, and radiation oncology.
 In July 2024, GE Healthcare announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire Intelligent Ultrasound Group's clinical AI software business for $51 million (approximately RMB 370 million). IUG focuses on developing integrated AI driven image analysis tools, dedicated to enhancing the intelligence and efficiency of ultrasound technology. GE Healthcare plans to fully integrate these advanced AI solutions into its ultrasound product line, optimizing workflows and enhancing the user experience for clinicians and patients. With the official acquisition, the product software and R&D team of IUG Clinical AI will be merged into GE Healthcare, becoming a powerful supplement to the existing AI equipment portfolio and accelerating the development of its next-generation AI tools.

With the landing of multiple major acquisitions, GE Healthcare currently ranks first in the FDA in the number of AI device authorizations for medical technology companies, and has maintained this position for three consecutive years.

In addition, at the RSNA annual meeting at the end of 2024, GE Healthcare also launched a series of AI driven innovations that utilize AI and digital technology to assist doctors in providing more personalized, precise, and humane treatment plans.

At the RSNA Annual Meeting, GE Healthcare showcased over 40 innovative achievements, including CareIntellect for Oncology application solutions and Clarify DL imaging solutions, showcasing its rich achievements in improving precision imaging and workflow efficiency, reflecting the company's important steps on the path of artificial intelligence and digital transformation.

Conclusion
At present, GE Healthcare is constantly leading an AI healthcare revolution through innovation and continuous reinforcement, and we look forward to the exciting development of GE Healthcare in the future.
